A Journey from 'White' Russia to Sommerville, MA U.S.A

Immigration in Context

When Louis came over, he was not alone. Between 1901-1910 there were huge swaths of immigration into the United States, particularly from Southern Eastern Europe such as present-day Ukraine.

Louis was a prime example of the time period. Louis and millions of other Russian Jews escaped anti-Semitism, before the Holocaust, and developed a new lifestyle in America. Louis was proud of his American transformation from a poor penniless immigrant to an upper-middle-class business owner.
