Life in America

Time in Needham

Living in Needham was very different for Seb compared to living in England. Living in England for 13 years, Seb thought that there wouldn't be much of a culture shock. However, even though we speak the same language, there are lots of differences in day-to-day life. Seb describes England as much more packed together and fast-paced, attributing that to the lack of a middle school system in England and the number of people for such limited space in England. In Needham, Seb made many new friends and fended off endless questions about his time in England, and the imitations of his accent. When he first came to America, he still called bathrooms the "lou" and the trunk of a car the "boot". He has since removed these British words for things from his vocabulary, however, the accent remains as a reminder that he is in fact, British.

Now

Seb's dad's job once again forced him to move. This time to Waxhaw, North Carolina. Seb's life in Waxhaw is very similar to that of teenagers. He participates in both soccer and track at the varsity level, and he wants to go to college here in America. When asked about whether he preferred living in America or England, Seb said, "I would say that growing up in England I preferred. I mean obviously, I didn't grow up in America, but I'm happy that I grew up in England... but also looking at the high school systems, I think I do prefer being in America from fifteen years and up". Even though Seb now lives in North Carolina, he still maintains contact with his friends in both Needham and England. Every year, around June, Seb comes up to Needham to see all of his friends who live in Needham. His family also returns to England to see relatives and friends in England.
