Happy January (ish) NHS!
May this year bring good cheer and even better grades. Just a few weeks ago, Punxsutawney Phil – “Weather Prognosticator Extraordinary” – emerged from his burrow to make his much-anticipated forecast. What did he see… his shadow! In other words, Punxsutawney Phil’s groundhog senses predict a snow day in our near future.
At any rate, we invite you to check out the latest Hilltopper edition. Read about slow walkers, the NHS parking crisis, recent incidents in the Needham community, and more!
You've got this! Only five months until June!

I only have a few questions. What motivates you to cosplay a turtle each and every day? Are you in no hurry to get to class? While I admire this “stop and smell the roses” mentality, the reality is that five minutes is just not enough time to smell the roses- and high school students are far from smelling like roses.

After working through countless hours of driver’s education and behind-the-wheel lessons, sophomores and juniors get to the exciting age of 16 ½, where being able to drive oneself to school seems like a rite of passage. However, the parking situation in the lower lot at Needham High has made that rite both stressful and dangerous for new drivers.

Needham High School rang in 2023 with a series of three emails from our principal, Mr. Sicotte. Each email contained vague information about a string of crimes committed in and around the school. First, a racial slur written in Sharpie was discovered on some electrical equipment installed on Memorial Field, followed by anti-Semitic graffiti in a bathroom being found and finally, the most recent email received by the NHS population on Friday, January 13, notifying the community that a student brought a BB gun to school.

In the past decade or so, we as a society tend to disregard the emotions of the rich and famous, even going so far as to shame them for complaining or expressing any negative emotion, which are things that everybody does. Even when we do express our sympathy towards celebrities, we almost always belittle whatever they’re suffering in the same sentence. You’ve probably heard this before: “I mean, I know so-and-so is like, super wealthy, but I still feel bad for them.” And while yes, the rich and famous don’t have to worry about feeding their kids or paying the bills, that doesn’t mean their lives are easy.

This month’s fashionista is none other than NHS English teacher Ms. Parsley! Ms. Parsley always wears the best outfits to school, and I was honored to interview her!

Three, two, one…HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Happy 2023 Needham High School! In the US, New Year’s Day is celebrated with many people spending their days off from school or work. Upon reflection on the past year, we often make goals for self-improvement. At NHS, many resolutions for students include procrastinating less, maintaining a healthy sleep schedule, succeeding in a sports season, or improving their grades. An NHS student said their goals often surround “self-care and mental health.” Yet, when the clock strikes midnight what really changes?

The Scholastic Art and Writing is an incredible competition that provides a platform for young artists and writers to gain recognition for their pieces, showcase their talents, and convey their messages to the world. A sophomore at NHS has won the prestigious Gold Key Award for their wonderful painting. What’s even more impressive is that only 5-7% of entries get the Gold Key Award and have the chance to advance to a national level. I had the opportunity to interview them about their artwork, and gain further insight into their creative process and how they may approach future pieces.
