Gus enlisted in the US military on October 7th, 1942 - his 22nd birthday. For three years, Gus moved around North Africa and Europe (spending most of his time in Italy where, working at a military bakery, he became fluent in Italian), until he returned on October 7th, 1945, his 25th birthday. Gus, like many other WWII veterans, did not talk about his time in the war very much, which led to this part of his life being mostly unknown.Â
