Russia's defeat in the Russo-Japanese war in 1905 brought a period of domestic and political unrest, which was heightened during the years leading up to the war. This political instability in Russia led to an increase in emigration, which included members of my family, the Solomovs, a Jewish family who fled from present day Ukraine to America.
