Early Life

Gus' Family

Gus' parents, Nathan and Rebecca Solomonov, had left Russia for Sweden in 1913 after Nathan went A.W.O.L from the Russian military. Unfortunately Nathan and Rebecca both left behind family, each losing contact with two siblings, who they never saw again. Gus was the youngest of his three siblings, Sally, Gabriel, and Joseph, who, like Gus, were all born in Malmo.

Journey to America

Nathan left for the US by himself in 1922, leaving the rest of his family, including Gus, behind. He got to work immediately as a butcher in New York City. After less than a year, he had made enough money to bring his family to America.

Gus Leaves for the US

After receiving enough money from his father, Gus, his three siblings, and his mother left for New York in July of 1923. They traveled on the Adriatic and reached Ellis Island on August 1st, 1923. Upon their entry into the country, the worker at Ellis Island changed the Solomonov's name to Solomon, which has been the family name ever since. Shortly after landing in New York, the Solomons left for Boston.

The Adriatic

The Adriatic was a famous ship during the early 1900s that made many trips accross the Atlantic transporting immigrants and eventually troops in WWI. It was also the first ocean liner to have a swimming pool and turkish bath!
