For the advocacy side of our project, we emailed state representatives who are not currently supporting the I AM bill, which would provide free period products to schools, prisons, and homeless shelters across Massachusetts. We urged them to turn their efforts to supporting this important piece of legislation. Below is the email we sent to the remaining state representatives who have yet to co-sponsor the bill, and is also a good template you can work off of if you would like to email them as well.
Dear ___________________ ,
Our names are Grace Burgett and Kate Queeney, and we are writing to you to urge you to support the I AM bill.
We are seniors at Holliston High School, and we are taking a Service Learning class where we created a project called StampOn Period Stigma. We created this project because we have seen how a lack of access to period products significantly impacts all areas of peoples' lives, and also contributes to a serious stigma that negatively impacts people's mental health. Nationally, 1 in 5 students miss critical learning time during their period, in large part due to a lack of access to period products.
When a student in our school advocated for period products to be provided in our bathrooms, it was a big relief for many who did not always have products, but we know that this is not the same reality for all students across Massachusetts. We want all people throughout Massachusetts to feel more assurance that they will always have access to period products whenever they need them, and this bill would put our hopes into legislation.
Thank you and we hope you consider supporting the I AM bill,
Grace Burgett and Kate Queeney
