Through my experiences as a Girl Scout over the past 11 years, I have been able to work on several projects, fundraisers, and service to my community. Most prominently, I co-led a drive to put together camp backpacks for homeless kids through the program Family Promise. Through this project, I was able to learn more about the growing issue of family homelessness and raise awareness in my school and church community about the stigma surrounding homelessness.
During my time in GSA, I participated in several LGBT events such as fundraisers and field trips. I was able to be a role model for younger students and learn how to be a safe person for LGBTQ issues.
I interned in Mrs. Garvin's (my 1st and 2nd-grade teacher, pictured here!) class, where I learned important workplace skills as well as got to experience first-hand the job of a teacher. I was able to help lead lessons, small group readings, grade papers, and other classroom tasks that were useful to know for my future endeavors. It was amazing to work with Mrs. Garvin, a teacher who has made a profound difference in my life and the lives of many other students.
Brenna Fisk and I decided to make a garden in the quiet courtyard for our senior project. We have planted native and pollinator plants, like butterfly bushes, milkweed, aster, and other wildflowers as they are crucial in our ecosystem. We also are building raised planters to put vegetables and herbs that we have started to grow in the school's greenhouse to make this a functional space that benefits the community.
