Public Art: Taught me not only the techniques to create murals and ceiling tiles but how important the beauty created for the public to enjoy is to the improvement of our world.
Philosophy: I was able to look at the history and different views from around the world about cultural and personal philosophy. By the end, I presented my own personal philosophy, pulling from the viewpoints of others that I had learned from.
Sociology: Discussed how culture is formed and how it functions locally and globally. I discovered how society has changed throughout time and compiled that into a final presentation about creating my own society based on what I believe works in the world.
Environmental Science: This course was crucial in expanding my interest in the health of the environment. It taught a range of topics surrounding not only the natural processes that make up the earth, but also climate change and how that is caused, and what is being done to mitigate it. It particularly sparked my interest in agriculture and how industrialization has affected nature. I learned creative ways that issues are being dealt with, which has inspired me to pursue this topic in my higher education.
Pre-Ap Spanish IV: I have spent 1st grade up until now in Spanish classes, and I value the communication skills that I have gained. Specifically in this course, I have been taught the grammar and language that is important in furthering my literacy, but also common expressions and political issues common in Latin American areas like immigration and discrimination. I've found that being able to understand and speak another language has helped me in many aspects of my life, like at work and in my other academic classes.
Service Learning: Taking this class was an incredible opportunity to make a change in my community. Through having the support of the GCP teachers and dedicated time during the day set aside to work on a project surrounding something that I am passionate about, this experience helped me feel more confident in my abilities.
Tiny House: As a class different than anything I have ever taken, tiny house taught me the practical skills of planning and building with confidence. I learned how to fix my mistakes and grow from them surrounded by a teacher and peers who were supportive and let me lead as well as follow.
Internship: I interned in Mrs. Garvin's (my 1st and 2nd-grade teacher!) class, where I learned important workplace skills as well as got to experience first-hand the job of a teacher. I was able to help lead lessons, small group readings, grade papers, and other classroom tasks that were useful to know for my future endeavors. It was amazing to work with Mrs. Garvin, a teacher who has made a profound difference in my life and the lives of many other students.
Suburban Homesteading: I have learned the important skills of caring for the outdoors and how to sustain myself in a more eco-friendly way through projects and hands-on activities.
Senior Project: Brenna Fisk and I decided to make a garden in the quiet courtyard for our senior project. We have planted native and pollinator plants, like butterfly bushes, milkweed, aster, and other wildflowers as they are crucial in our ecosystem. We also are building raised planters to put vegetables and herbs that we have started to grow in the school's greenhouse to make this a functional space that benefits the community.
