Dominican University of California (DUC) has partnered with the California Academy of Sciences (CAS) for a research project. Students from DUC work weekly at the CAS, where measure the skulls and examine teeth to gather data in order to formulate our research. Our objective is to study the pathology of the skulls and to discover the differences between age classes and sexes.
The California sea lion skull (seen on the right) are the skulls we are working with at CAS. The image shown is a male, as it can be identified by a sagittal crest on the top of its head. CAS holds nearly 3000 skulls from which we are sampling. Most of the skulls were donated from the Ray Bandar (RB) collection.Â
The skulls are well preserved inside boxes found on the shelves in the basement of CAS. CAS has bars to help prevent the boxes from falling off the shelves in case of an earthquake and prevent the breaking of the skulls.
The skulls are labelled carefully by a CAS and RB catalog number, along with details of sex, specimen total length, collection date, and collection location.
