As the Design and Layout Editor for Dominican’s new History & Politics magazine, I’ve helped shape the visual identity of a publication that’s being built entirely from the ground up. I design page layouts, choose typography and color schemes, and make sure each issue feels cohesive, readable, and aligned with our mission. My work also involves collaborating with writers and editors to ensure that every piece — from opinion columns to historical analyses — is presented in a way that enhances its message and draws readers in.
This internship has strengthened my eye for detail, my ability to communicate visually, and my confidence in making creative decisions that affect the whole magazine. I’ve learned how to balance aesthetics with clarity, work on tight deadlines, and adapt designs as editorial priorities shift. Being part of this project has shown me how meaningful student-led publications can be and how design plays a key role in bringing academic conversations to life. It’s been one of the most collaborative and creatively rewarding experiences of my time at Dominican.
