Fall 2023: Sun Valley Elementary School
Each semester in the Education Studies program we are placed in classrooms around Marin County which contribute to our field. This was my first year being at Dominican and being placed in a classroom, but for me as an educator is crucial because it allows me to figure out what grade I want to teach in the future. For the fall semester, I was placed at Sun Valley Elementary in Mrs. Langley's 1st grade class. I enjoyed getting to know both the students and the teacher and am extremely grateful for the wisdom she shared with me during my observations. Although I enjoyed observing and getting to know the students, I don't see myself teaching at such a young grade level and found it to be a little difficult to connect to the students albeit providing me with a nuanced and invaluable understanding of the grade level and the interworkings of elementary education.
Spring 2024: Davidson Middle School
The spring semester we were required to be placed in a Special Education Class room. This semester I was placed at Davidson Middle School which was a switch from being in the elementary school setting at Sun Valley Elementary School. Having the opportunity to observe at Davidson Middle School is crucial for me as an educator because in the future I see myself as being a high school history teacher. At Davidson Middle School they have two SPED classes and I was able to observe both SPED classes. These two classes were taught by Ms. Schmitt and Mrs. Ryan which were a 6th and 7th grade class. I enjoyed observing in these classes with these age groups because I felt like I could be more personable with the students and facilitate a bigger impact on them when compared to last semester's observations in a first-grade class at that age group. Going forward, I am reaffirmed in my position to teach either in a Middle School or High School.
