In this project we are making portraits of either oil pastel, color pencil, or pencil for children in India. I'm looking forward to experimenting with the different mediums, especially oil pastel which I think will be most enjoyable for capturing her complexion. My goal is ultimately to create something my girl will love.
The most important aspect of this project is to produce a piece of art that the child can cherish. This can be considered worship as we are highlighting aspects of God's best creation: human beings. Even though these children in India are miles away, we are still united in Christ. Therefore a measure of success is found in how we can capture a glimpse of the beauty God has already created.
Across medias in the last four weeks I found the most challenging aspect to be matching my girl's complexion. I learned that understanding the values and capturing them well is what makes a portrait look good. I am choosing oil pastel because it is the most enjoyable to blend and add unique coloring to.
I love how my portrait turned out. I think over time, oil pastel was fun to work with and it really does give the impression of oil paint (without all the hassle of brushes & water!). I hope my kid is equally as excited about it as I am. If I could say anything to her in person, I would remind her that even though we are miles and miles apart, there is someone who cares about her and she is loved.
