For this we rolled out clay, chose whatever texture we wanted and cut it with the stencil for a lantern. We then used more clay to put it all together and got to add more features such as a handle for the lid, feet for the bottom and holes for the light to shine through. Overall, this project was super fun, I liked getting to choose what glaze to do, but most of all I love how it turned out in the end and I can't wait to get to work with more clay over the course of this year.
Overall, I really enjoyed this project, I thought it was a lot of fun, I love the color I chose and the pattern. I wish I had taken more time to carve out the design because of some imperfections that are visible. This project was also pretty difficult because my plate broke the 3rd day, so I did have to restart with limited time left. This is not my favorite project just because I don't love the result but I would choose to do it again and just take more time on it and make sure it's exactly how I wanted it to be.
I loved doing this ombre sunset and my favorite part was getting to choose all of these Bible verses, even though some of it is cut out, you can see that each verse has a bold letter, and when those bold letters are put together, they spell out "vanvelson" which is my last name. On the bottom which is not shown here, I wrote "I Love You A Bushel And A Peck", a song that my mom always used to sing which reminds me of her.
Here on the front we have all of my favorite things or things that have shaped who I am. The first one we have pizza slices, showing that my dad owns a pizza parlor and I grew up working there, baseball showing my love for the sport, especially the Dodgers, elephants and sunflowers which are my sister's favorite, a ocean wave showing my love for the beach, cowboy hats symbolizing my mexico mission trip, flowers which are beautiful, music which is my favorite, brussel sprouts my favorite veggie, Starbucks, the best, and last a tennis ball. On the top of each ray, not shown, are tiny pictures of me and my friends showing ym love for everyone who surrounds me.
My favorite part about this project was getting to learn how to work on the pottery wheel. It definitely wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, but overall I'm pretty happy with what I came up with. My least favorite part was making the handles because every time I would bend it, it would crack and I wasn't super happy about how it turned out (especially because one of my handles fell off). But I did love my pottery and I can't wait to use them.Â
Clay Animal
For this project, I decided to make a whale shark out of clay. The reason I chose this animal is because I wanted it to be bigger and love the ocean as well as whale sharks. My favorite part was getting to paint this and putting the dots on, I could see it coming together. This is my favorite project I've done so far and I'm so happy with how it turned out. I also made it flat on one side, that way I am able to hang it on my wall. I also made the mouth open and have thought about maybe putting flowers in it as a decor piece in my room/ dorm next year. I really loved this project and love the result!
The building of this was super fun and easy, kind of hard to smooth out, mostly time consuming but I loved adding the spout and seeing my vision come to life.
Adding the leaves and the flowers were super fun to figure out and experiment with, even though one of my flowers broke in the kiln, I still loved how all the details came out.
Glazing was one of my favorite parts, I loved choosing the color scheme and seeing the final product, if I could redo it, I would add more glaze to he pink flowers but overall I loved this project and the final result.
