An important part of math is using the correct vocabulary to describe something. In fact, using vocabulary shows a grasp of the subject because a student can clearly express their thinking.
In the slideshow(s) below, each one has 24 slides.
What you can do is to go to a random number generator and generate a number between 1 and 24. One of these is shown below. Then, you can show that number picture to the rest of this class by going to that slide number. Another option is to decide on a slide that contains something appropriate to the topic you are currently learning about.
Have students sit in groups of four or so. Then, have them do this process. Once the picture is on the screen, they will have 1 - 2 minutes to write down as many things as they notice. Finally, they will share with their groups. If students have written something down that somebody else has also written down, they will mark the item they have in common. Then, they will add up their scores as follows: 5 XP for every marked item, 10 XP for every unmarked item [if you are not using the system that is presented in the General page, then have 1 point for marked and 2 for unmarked]. The player with the most points wins!
If you want, have the students share out to the class afterwards about something that everyone in their group wrote and have them share out.
This activity encourages creativity and critical thinking, two of the four twenty-first century skills.
