Welcome to Gladiatores! Gladiatores, meaning "Titans" in Latin, is Hall’s Foreign Language Magazine. Here, we showcase all the amazing work done by Hall's Foreign Language Department: Spanish, French, Chinese, Latin, and American Sign Language (ASL). Spring Holidays

Hinamatsuri: March 3rd 

Is a religious holiday in Japan, and platforms covered with a red carpet are used to display a set of ornamental dolls representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period.

 

Holi: March 8-9

Holi is a holiday celebrated around the subcontinent of India. It marks the coming of spring after a long winter and is symbolic of the triumph of good over evil. It is also a festival of color celebrating the love of the gods Radha and Krishna, important figures in the Hindu Religion. 

Nowruz: March 21

Nowruz, or the Persian New Year, is celebrated by millions of people in Iran. It is a celebration that marks the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one. Nowruz is usually celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox. It is an opportunity to reflect on the past and set intentions for the future. 

Passover: April 5-13th

Passover is a major Jewish holiday that celebrates the Biblical story of the Israelite escape from slavery in Egypt. Participants eat, pray, drink wine, sing, discuss current social justice issues, and tell stories that are prescribed by a central book called the Haggadah.

Songkran: April 13th

Songkran is the Thai new year and a water festival. To celebrate, people wake up early and visit temples to pray and present monks with offerings. Later on, however, young family members will pour rose and jasmine water over their relatives' hands and feet. The name Songkran comes from a Sanskrit word meaning 'passing' or 'approaching'.

May Day: May 1st

May Day is a European holiday celebrating the beginning of Summer-- it is usually celebrated on May first, halfway between the Spring equinox and the Summer solstice. The holiday usually consists of the gathering of wildflowers, setting up a Maypole, and dancing around bonfires. 

Cinco De Mayo: May 5th

Cinco de Mayo, meaning May 5th, is celebrated to commemorate Mexico's victory over France at the battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War of 1862. A typical Cinco de Mayo includes parades, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing, and traditional foods such as tacos and mole poblano.
