Flamenco
Flamenco dance comes from southern Spain in the Andalusian region associated with gypsies. During the 9th and 14th century, the Roma people immigrated to Spain and brought with them their guitar music (which accompanies the dance), tambourines, bells and wooden castanets. The music of the gypsies then combined with the rich cultures of Sephardic Jews and Moors, who also live in southern Spain to create the Flamenco we know and love today.
Flamenco is a serious and passionate type of dance, with intricate footwork and movements. The dance begins with the dancer still, without facial expression. Then, when the dancer can hear the music, they move their hands in a constant rhythm of strong slaps. The dancer will start a passionate dance, with involves stomping fiercely and large movements with arms. Sometimes there are percussion accessories on the shoes. Castanets are also sometimes in the hands to click and the folding fans (which we see many times with this dance) are for visual impact. Flamenco is a beautiful and graceful dance, that requires a lot of hard-work and dedication.
