The Wayland High School Green Team will officially be joining MYCC as a steering member! Elena Mente, a junior and a committed Green Team member has stepped up to be our representative at MYCC meetings. Through MYCC, the Green Team hope to increase our civil engagement and participate in climate action beyond Wayland.
Between May and June of 2022, all WHS students were required to compost at lunch due to our composting initiative. Working with Black Earth Compost, we were able to reduce our trash by 75%. Items that went into the compost bin were mostly paper plates, contrary to the assumption that compost would be mostly food waste.
During Winter Week, the Green Team organized a very successful slow fashion show in protest of the culture of fast fashion. Students were able to display their thrifted finds and sewing creations in front of the lecture hall well over maximum capacity. A slideshow in the background also showed the harms of fast fashion and displayed the "slow fashion" clothes in greater detail. The Green Team hopes that this will be a reoccurring event during future Winter Weeks!
Congratulations to Jules Apse, Areeb Ahmed, and Gina Wang for speaking so eloquently for the climate at Wayland Town Meeting on Saturday 15th May.
Jules and Areeb advocated for Wayland's declaration of a climate emergency; Gina advocated against the construction of a synthetic turf field at Loker Conservation. These students created videos, slide shows to be shown at advisory, posters & petitions to support their advocacy in school and at standout locations in Wayland. This is civil engagement at its best.
On a sunny April day, residents of all ages and sizes helped pick up trash throughout Wayland and it's conservation areas. High schoolers were able to earn volunteer hours, and around 80 participants were able to collect over 100 bags of trash!
On the campus of Wayland High School, from September to June, the Green Team tends several gardens. We organize daily composting from the school kitchen. This year we are growing eggplants, tomatoes, bell peppers, basil, thyme, and more! We are also looking for volunteers to keep an eye on the garden over the summer.
Earth Week 2019, the team constructed a whale composed of one day's worth of recycled water bottles. Check out this report on global plastic consumption and the LACK of recycling.
