Lazaro Francisco adopts the curriculum established by the Philippines, namely K to 12. The K to 12 Program extends the basic education cycle in the Philippines from 10 to 12 years. It includes six years of primary education, four years of junior high school, and two years of senior high school. So, Lazaro Francisco student study for 4 years.
The program was implemented through the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, also known as Republic Act 10533. The curriculum is learner-centered and competency-based. It focuses on the holistic development of the Filipino learner, emphasizing skills, values, and competencies. The K to 12 Program aims to equip Filipino students with the necessary skills and competencies to prepare them for higher education, employment, or entrepreneurship.
TEACHING PLAN
Before conducting the learning process, as a teacher, one of the essential things to prepare is a lesson plan. The lectures from my host university and the cooperating teacher (CT) from Lazaro really helped me in perfecting the lesson plan that I had designed and the material I used in the lesson plan was the introduction to cell.
TEACHING PRACTICE
Each class must go through several steps explained below. I started the class with a prayer led by the class leader, then started the initial stage, namely elicit or orientation, by engaging students with some questions to recall the previous material, and on that occasion, I used a game.
After that, I explain the material interspersed with some brief questions to make students more active. I also provide a small game, which is fill the blank, to help students better understand the material and retain what has been learned together. At the end of the lesson, I give a quiz to check how well students understand the material I have presented.
Time Management and Activites
Every learning session lasts for 50 minutes and consists of several stages, including the following:
Opening Activities (15 minutes)
a. Elicit = Reviewing the previous lesson or presenting the new lesson.
b. Engage = Establishing a purpose for the lesson.
c. Engage = Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson.
d. Explore = Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills.
Core Activities (30 minutes)
a. Explain = Developing mastery.
b. Elaborate = Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living.
Closing Activities (10 minutes)
a. Elaborate = Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson.
b. Evaluate = Evaluating learning.
c. Extend = Additional activities for application or remediation.
The class used for the final demo was the 7th grade, where this class serves as a transition from elementary school to junior high school, so many students are not yet accustomed to focusing. Therefore, to keep the class conducive, I use something called 'yel-yel'.
I created simple cheers to use at the beginning of the class with the aim of building enthusiasm. When the class started to become less conducive, this activity proved effective in helping students stay focused and pay attention to what I was conveying. Additionally, I also added some games at the beginning or middle of the lesson to help students stay relaxed while learning.
