During class observations at Ateneo de Naga Senior High School gave me a new experience to look at how teaching and learning happen in a real classroom setting with a different educational setting from my home country. I was able to see different teaching styles and classroom interactions which helped me gain new ideas for my own teaching. The observation really impressed me that the students were really active to join the discussion. Additionally, the way teachers created engaging teaching activities was truly amazing that made the learning environment feel active and meaningful.
Before the teaching process, creating a lesson plan is an important part of making the teaching process organized, clear, and effective. At Ateneo de Naga Senior High School, teachers prepare lesson plans based on the school curriculum while also adjusting them to students’ needs and learning styles. The lessons are designed with clear objectives and activities that help students stay engaged during class. Most of all classes use a student-centered approach, where students are encouraged to participate actively through discussions, sharing ideas, and exploring topics more deeply. Teachers also include activities that support critical thinking, helping students not only remember information but also understand and apply it in real-life situations, making the learning experience more interactive and meaningful.
The teaching learning activities integrated in the classroom mostly use creative ways and diverse learning to make the classroom more enjoyable and engaging for students. Instead of starting lessons with long explanations, they often begin with interesting activities such as videos or pictures connected to the topic in real-life situations. This helps students become more interested and understand the lesson more easily. In addition, teachers also include simple games and interactive activities that make the class feel more lively and encourage students to participate actively.
Another teaching strategy commonly used is the use of case studies and real-life situations to improve students’ critical thinking skills. Through discussions and problem-solving activities, students are encouraged to analyze ideas, share opinions, and work together to find solutions. These activities help students understand the lesson more deeply while also building their confidence, communication, and logical thinking skills. Because of these teaching methods, the learning environment becomes more active, meaningful, and enjoyable for students.
After finishing the explanation, teachers at Ateneo de Naga Senior High School usually use formative assessment to check if students really understand the lesson. As I observed, the activity such as answering questions displayed on the screen within a certain time limit. This activity made the class feel more active because students had to stay focused, think fast, and participate during the lesson. From the students’ answers, the teacher could easily see whether the class was ready to continue to the next topic or still needed more explanation. If some students were still confused, the teacher would help them through discussions, additional examples, or more practice questions. The other assessment is formative such as making a draft then teachers will give feedback that will help students in their writing activity. Because of this, the learning process felt more supportive and students were given enough time to understand the material better before moving on.
