Stories told to make sense of the world
Lines, or ideas, being told/passed down in order to teach a certain lesson/moral. Most often, it's dictated by society. Children pick up on narratives as they grow up, and ultimately shape their decisions based on what they've heard in the past
In debate:
Often mixed in with Societal Norms
Beliefs, Ideologie, etc, that society deems acceptable/appropriate
To create arguments in narrative rounds, there are a few things to consider:
What is the message you're trying to push?
How are people most likely to interpret this message?
What is the difference on either side?
How do people change based on this story, comparison, or message?
You need to prioritize one main idea - Narrative and hypothetical rounds get very messy very fast
Choose one message you're trying to push, and continue to expand on that one idea
You can always add more details and branch off later on
For most narrative debates, the motion will start with THR - This House Regrets.
This means - You're looking back on what's happened in the past, whether that be hundreds of years ago, during a historically significant period, or yesterday.
The goal is to compare the Status Quo (current world) to a world where said narrative would not have existed. What are the benefits? Harms? Pros and Cons? Who's affected most? To what extent are people, or the world as a whole, harmed?
Below are some examples of narrative motions:
THR the narrative that homeownership is aspirational
THR the advancement of the “follow your dreams” narrative by elementary and secondary school teachers.
THR the dominance of the 'evil west' narrative in academic circles
THR end-of-world narratives when advocating for climate change policy
THR the narrative of "I'm just a girl."
THR the narrative that women can have it all
THBT religious leaders should abandon the use of the narrative of "test of God" in religious preachings.
THP the narrative that everyone should go to therapy over the narrative that therapy is only necessary for some people
THBT that the “lesser evil” narratives to gain votes is an un-democratic narrative.
