Forms of creative expression
In debate:
Usually refers to music, visual arts, dance, tradition, and culture
Writing also counts - emphasis on creative writing, novels, autobiographies, etc.
It's important to note that there's never a concrete definition, or meaning, to art. Art is subjective, and art debates tend to come down to what's more likely and relevant.
Some things to consider:
How much an artist is valued in society - if they disappeared, would the world riot? Would people care?
The more people pay attention, the more value they have - the more their art is worth
Abstract identities/ideology
People will draw whatever meaning they want from art - even if it's not intended by the artist
People don't need to understand an artwork to draw meaning from it
Connecting with art happens regardless
Understanding an artwork is not always a good thing
Identity - defining yourself by aligning with popular artworks/pieces
Subjectivity of human nature
Depictions of things aren't actually the thing, but rather, just the idea
"This is not a pipe" - It's an image conveying the idea of a pipe, but not the physical object
Objects in life are merely representations, not the actual thing
Hard for artists to convey the same message over and over
Stretching reality - getting philosophical!!
Questioning human nature
Cannot find meaning through reason
Human beings exist purposelessly, in a universe we cannot dictate
The universe is chaotic, irrational, and ultimately meaningless
Basis for existentialism
What is it?
Disconnecting the author of a work from their artwork/written piece
Meaning of a text comes from reader's interpretation, not from what's been written
Biases, ideas, opinions, etc of the author are not considered when interpreting their work
Draw meaning assuming the author is anonymous, or doesn't exist
Ex. J. K . Rowling
Openly controversial/transphobic online
Death of the Author states her online opinions are not reflected in her books - Readers should look beyond what they know about her political/social views and focus on the text itself
What she writes does not reflect her beliefs, etc.
