A roleplay is one of the elements of DECA competition if you are in an oral event. It is a presentation that you do to a judge. You play the role of either a manager, employee, or customer, and you are asked to solve a problem or come up with a plan. Each event will have it's own roleplay. For example, HLM will have a different roleplay from BLTDM. If you are in an individual event, you have 10 minutes to prepare and 10 minutes to present. If you are in a team event, you have 30 minutes to prepare and 15 minutes to present.
Roleplays are the ultimate DECA challenge, testing your communication, creativity, and ability to come up with a solution on the spot.
Practice, practice, practice. The more practice roleplays you do, the better you'll get. Doing your first roleplay can be a nerve-wracking experience but as you do more and more, you'll fine-tune your roleplay methods, improve your creativity and communication skills, and become comfortable doing roleplays. Practice with a friend, family member, or by yourself!
Study your performance indicators. Performance indicators are things you have to talk about in your roleplay to get points. PI's are listed at the bottom of the first page of your roleplay. This is the bulk of your content and it's what you study beforehand. Follow this link for a list of all the PI's to study. Quizlet is a great resource for this!
Connect your solution to your PI's. Along with the performance indicators, you will usually be asked to come up with some sort of solution in your roleplay. Connect your solution to your PI's to make sure everything flows smoothly.
Creativity is key. In order to stand out from the competition, incorporate visuals, real-life examples, industry trends, innovative solutions, and more into your presentation.
