The Iberian Lynx are one of the last remaining cat species in Europe. If they were to go extinct, Europe would lose an important part of genetic history and a part of its biodiversity. The Lynx are a very important part of their ecosystem because they’re a keystone species. Keystone species are organisms that are incredibly important to their environment and the species around them. If they were removed it would drastically change its ecosystem. The Iberian Lynx control the population of smaller animals in their habitat such as rabbits, deer, and ducks. Keeping those populations at a steady amount prevents the depletion of those smaller animals' food source (“Iberian Lynx Conservation”, 2020). If the Iberian Lynx were to go extinct then those populations would grow and the ecosystem would not be able to support the new population. The Lynx is also important because they bring in revenue from tourism as people come to see this rare and beautiful animal in its natural habitat.
