Welcome to the 'R' resources page! The 'R' sound is one of the most commonly mispronounced sounds that SLPs work with! When students mispronounce the 'R' sound, they usually say a 'W' sound instead. To say the 'R' sound, the middle part of the tongue must be elevated, spread, and bunched up in the back of the mouth. Sometimes, the tip of the tongue is up for the 'R' sound (retroflex R), and sometimes it is not (bunched R). When a student says a 'W' sound instead of an 'R,' it means that their tongue is not elevating and moving to the back of their mouth. Rather, it is staying on the floor of the mouth and the student is trying to over-compensate for lack of tongue movement by using excessive lip rounding, thereby producing a 'W.'
