foam modeling and onshape

sketching the foam model

First what i do is a put the foam down and trace around the it with a pencil to see how big it is and after i use a blue pencil to sketch the design that i'am drawing and make sure it is just like the version i did online.Now i will just use scissors to cut the design out and stick it on the foam. I make sure to use glue because if we need to make any adjustment it can still be cut by the hot wire unlike tape.

After i have to cut off the drawing of the model i did and then stick it onto the foam with glue and that will be the outline so i can see where i will cut.Also for the middle layer it will be the place we hold the mosquito coil so i just traced it so that it fits but not perfectly because otherwise it would be hard to get out.

We had to use this machine which only the teacher could use to cut my foam into three different parts which were equal.

This is the finished product and currently i think that i have to sand the bottom of the foam model so it just looks like one piece and i want to curve it more aswell.as you can see from my design i also have cut off the bottom so that it shows the seperation between the wood and the blue resin.

This machine is the machine that i used to cut my foam model into the shape that i want it to be to use this machine you have to turn on a air blower machine then you have to put on goggles.And after you are done using the machine you have to sweep the bits of foam that we cut off onto the down to the grown.

glueing

From here i used wood glue to stick the three layers of foam onto each other since the glue wouldnt hold i used a clamper to clamp it together so it doenst move apart.But there will be some glue coming out of the holes i just used tissues to cleans that up.

sand paper

I used sandpaper to smoothen up the design and also to make it abit more curved.As you can see in the pictured i sandpapered the bottom alot so it looks like it was one piece instead of looking like i glued three pieces together

I chose to used 400 grit sandpaper then 1000 grit sandpaper because it was taking very long to smoothen the bottom.

glue

This is the glue i used when small bits from my foam model fell off it sticks very well and you can put it into a small scraper then glue that part that fell off.

Why do we do foam modeling

We use foam model to see what are the pros and cons of our design so we can improve it later on and see if there is anything that you have found while making this that might effect the process of making it later it is also just to see if it works.Foam modeling is used in architecture,airplane designs,cars and boats they can be small,regular or large sized foam models.

Finished model

This is the finished foam model I took many different angles of it in the light box and i took a picture of how it looked without the mosquito coil.And after i will take these photos and upload them into procreate to see if i can improve my design before i actually make it.

Changes

Here i have decided that i wanted to change the design because i think that it looks to simple and i want it to look more interesting and more challenging to make.And i do not like the colour of the resin because i think it is to dark

These are the changes that i have made to my design i made the blue resin lighter so it is more like the ocean and i made the back alot sharper and longer as well as the front.I like this design more because it looks like a sail or a tail of a fish.

This tool is called the wrap tool this tool allows you to move the picture whoever you like and stretch it and i use it to wrap around a template.

This is my final selected design i did not add any shadows or cool details because i wasnt here for 2 lessons.The new design as a lighter blue which transitions into dark and 2 two sharp edges.

This is my starting template as you can see it is just a simple plain brown block with a green mosquito coil in the center

this cube we can use to see many different angles of our design and you could move it anyway front,back,side etc.

After i would need to cut the block template into the shape of my design i need to extrude it and cut the shape of my design then remove the rest.

After that i would need to seperate the part that im gonna make out of wood and the part that im going to pour the resin into.to do this I extrude the line that will cut the peace into two. Then use the add and extrude all the way. Finally use the split tool and select the peace to split than select the extruded line as the place to split and than you will have the peice broken into two.

After that i would just need to make the section that im gonna pour resin in blue because my design colour is blue.

For the brass pin first i needed to import the part studio into the assembly and then i put th whole thing together.After that i would need to draw a circle then make a hole out of it and that would be my hole to put the brass pin in.

I think that my on shape have turn out very well but mabye i have made the hole abit too big so mabye i need to shrink that down but overall i think that the finished product turned out very well.
