Angel Island
Angel Island is one of the first field trips the DBA Juniors take at the beginning of the school year! Angel Island is a recurring field trip, in terms of it is always one of the first field trips students in DBA would go on.
DBA is an academy that ensures its students are always learning, but they also make sure their students have fun in the academy, hence the trips! The field trips are not only educational, but they're also just fun for students; it may be an "extension of their classrooms," but it's the fun that they have that counts to them. With the field trips, students can get away from the stress and enclosure of a classroom, and instead relieve their stress on these trips, all the while they still learn something new every day.
We reached out to a few of our DBA students---Seniors and juniors who have been before--- who went on the trip for a quick interview on their experience about the trip; here's what they had to say!
Student Experiences
"My experience during the Angel Island field trip was positive. We arrived [early] so I had [time] to order and eat breakfast at a local shop. After that, we went on the ferry, it was a beautiful view as we went from Tiburon...to Angel island. Upon arriving at the island we met with a tour guide and we began our hike up to the facility..., and yet again the views were amazing as we made our way there. We took a group picture at the bell and our guides showed up and enriched us on the history of the place and we got to tour inside the buildings. After that we had free time to eat our lunch or a snack. There was a beach area very close to where we were so I went down there with a friend and watched the waves and ocean....It was a very relaxing experience, a good break from school and all the stress!"

"My experience on Angel Island was great! I loved learning about the history of the immigrants who used to be there, and I especially loved seeing the poetry carved into the barracks walls. It really made the history feel personal. It's like I could hear the voices of the immigrants who passed through there. It was a really memorable experience overall!"

"My trip to Angel Island was really fun. I liked how we got a tour of the buildings and how the guide told us about the history. I enjoyed the walk up to the detention center, especially because the weather was so nice. The bus ride there and back wasn’t too long, and it was comfortable since the buses were really nice. The town was super cute, and I liked that we had some time to walk around and get food. The ferry ride was also very fun, and we even got to see seals, which were adorable. I would go again if I could (I’ve already been there twice)."

"...I had a lot of fun on the Angel Island Field Trip. The hike was really tiring, but it was a much needed experience as the scenery was absolutely stunning and it was a great reset from daily school activities. The tour was eye-opening as the guides went really deep into the history of each aspect of the museum, and it got a little bit overwhelming, just because of the situations that the immigrants had to face. But overall, the experience was really fun and memorable. I would absolutely recommend it to the sophomores to go next year!"
