Earlier this month, reality TV show Dance Moms star and current singer, Jojo Siwa announced that she invented gay pop in an interview with Billboard. Naturally, this received an explosive reaction from the Queer community which has been grasping at any bit of representation given in the music industry and wants to be recognized, at the very least by one of their own. Siwa later clarified that she does not believe she invented Gay Pop, but it is rather a category she’d like to see considered a genre of music. Whether others agree or not, gay music exists and is thriving.
Going back a little under 100 years, Ma Rainey, an American Blues singer was born. She followed the conventions of the Blues genre, but what set her apart from the rest was her explicitly using women as her muses in her music.

The collaboration, Under Pressure, released in 1981 by David Bowie and Queen has long been viewed as a queer anthem; not due to its lyrics, but because of the artists. Although neither enjoyed labelling themselves, Bowie did establish that he was bisexual in many interviews, and Freddie Mercury was quite open about his relationships with both men and women. Bowie communicated his discomfort with the relentless repetition of the questions ‘Are you gay? Or are you straight?’ in interviews explaining that he never saw the relevance of his sexuality when discussing his career. Both rockstars advocated for HIV/AIDS awareness at a time when queer people experienced an additional wave of discrimination as they faced the blame of the AIDS pandemic. They were considered the faces of the queer community in music for a large proportion of the community.
The hit single Fast Car, recently rediscovered at the 2024 Grammys due to Luke Combs' performance, was originally written by Tracy Chapman in 1988. Although she never announced her sexuality, her first public relationship was with author Alice Walker and she has been in a relationship with a woman since 2010. She is a queer icon to many.
77-year-old Elton John ended his last tour in Stockholm, Sweden last summer. He has never stopped advocating for AIDS/HIV awareness and hasn’t stopped making music. He is married to David Furnish and has two sons. He first came out as bisexual and later came out again as gay, destigmatising the idea that sexuality is fluid. He is a gay pop star.
What about younger artists? Who is the new generation of queer musicians? More and more queer artists are rising in the charts and as women are finding their space in the industry so are queer women. Many people think of the alternative pop Norwegian singer Marie Ulven, known as Girl In Red, when thinking of gay pop and to say she didn’t pave the path for younger artists today would be incorrect. Many of her songs became viral on TikTok in 2019 for being so openly gay and finally giving young lesbians a song to relate to, some sort of an anthem. At the same time, many other queer songs were starting to surface and this ‘girl in red’ effect was gaining traction. She by Dodie, Hit the Back by King Princess, I Wish by Hayley Kiyoko, and many other songs by L Devine, Halsey, Kehlani, MUNA, Princess Nokia, and Arlo Parks gained recognition as songs about sapphic love.

In 2024, pop music has a sapphic melody. Chappell Roan is writing songs for everyone about everyone while opening for Olivia Rodrigo on tour. Billie Eilish is leaking her song ‘Lunch’ from her upcoming album at Coachella, lyrics about her ‘craving, not a crush’ for a girl called Claire. The Japanese House, MUNA, and boygenius are all queer bands headlining on tour. Reneé Rapp’s soundtrack for the Mean Girls Musical film holds the lyrics ‘Can a gay girl get an amen?’. All in all, queer women are finding more space in the music industry.
Is this enough? It surely doesn’t seem like it. Although there is so much more room for women today and those mentioned are queer, they are mostly cisgender and white, giving them an immense advantage in the industry. It would be incredible to hear more from trans and POC queer artists so every little queer child has someone to look up to and hear themselves in.
Gay pop is booming.
