Most students have heard of terms like “investment” and “finance”, with constant exposure to them through social media videos, inspirational stories of getting rich, movies like “Wolf of Wall Street”, and many others. Many know that investment is an alternate, albeit risky, form of income, where somehow, some people can use existing money to earn more money. Most people know that investment can comes with big risks and big rewards.
Despite this, most of them do not actually know how investment actually works. Most students have only rudimentary impressions of terms like the “stock market” and “investment”, and a complete lack of knowledge anything financially-related beyond that. In addition, if a student every wants to learn more about it though, current online resources are also lacking. There is an oversaturation of confusing and contradictory resources online, like websites, corporate animations, and long video essays, that do not effectively educate students on the different forms of finance. Most of these resources are also borne from corporate agendas, with many websites and videos also being advertisements for investment apps or companies. Therefore, students may not be able to effectively learn about different forms of finance, much less how to strategise and be wise when investing.
Through Project Plutus, we aim to educate Singaporean secondary school students on the importance of investing, and the different types of and strategies regarding investing. Through our resources, students will be able to understand more about investment and passive income, useful knowledge that they can implement later on in their lives.
Project Plutus was formed in late December 2022, when members Zhichen, Ijen, and Luke, along with a fourth ex-member, got together to form a Category 4 Project Work Group. In early January, we decided to create a Project to teach students about finance and investment. In late January, our fourth ex-member left us, before Wei Yee joined to replace him. Thus, Project Plutus was born.
Secondary School students aged 13-16.
These students are at the precipice between childhood and adulthood, and investment and finance will be useful to them very soon.
Most of these students are at an age with short attention spans, and love excitement and entertainment, learning well with concise and interesting manners of putting out useful information. Therefore, our resources would suit them well
Our target audience is also at an age where they are able to learn and take in information quickly, thus they are at the best age to learn about the complex yet fascinating world of investment.
