I'm learning to grow and preserve, as well as medicinal uses for different herbal teas, called tisanes.
I've been experimenting with different types of herbs for different uses, infused in alcohol and even apple cider vinegar.
Infused oils with healing herbs and essential oils can create soothing salves, balms, and massage oils.
A worthy fall tradition, a product that I have made and shared with a few ill friends and family, and who have recognized the benefits as well. I find that it helps when I start dosing myself with this tonic at the first signs of tickle in my throat or little hint of sinus congestion. I work with elderberry tincture, plenty of liquids in the form of warm tea and as many servings as I can fit in of fruit and veggies. Though I am not trained as a doctor, and I cannot give medical advice, I hope everyone makes this tonic for aiding in their family's home apothecary.
Recipe:
1 qt. Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
1/2 c horseradish root (grated) *I didn't have any so I skipped it
1/2 c chopped onion
1/4 c chopped garlic
1/4 c ginger (grated)
1 lemon quartered
*honey (to taste)
*chopped fresh hot peppers or cayenne (to taste)
*optional add-ins: turmeric and black pepper, cinnamon, rosemary
Combine all ingredients except the honey in a quart size mason jar. I recommend a plastic lid to avoid rust and degrading from the vinegar reacting with the rubber seal and metals of canning lids. Shake daily, or as often as you remember, with good intentions in your heart. Continue to infuse for 4-6 weeks for best results. Strain out solids, then add honey to taste. I usually start with about 2T every 4hrs as soon as symptoms start. Many have reported how this old folk remedy has great healing properties.
