We will not be holding a Valentine’s Day party in 5th grade this year. However, students are welcome to drop their Valentine’s cards into their classmates’ bins at the end of the day before dismissal. We currently have 68 students in the neighborhood.
Please ensure students are dressed appropriately for the fluctuating temperatures inside and outside the building. Unfortunately, we do not control our neighborhood temperature. We can be freezing in the morning and sweating in the afternoon. We suggest dressing in layers.

We're halfway through the year, and OMHS is already preparing to receive our 5th graders. The counselors will visit on Monday, February 2, 2026 to review the block schedule, explain course selections, and answer some questions.
Students should be in the habit of bringing home and returning to school their Take-Home folder. There may not always be papers to take home, but we are building the expected routine.
Students continue to practice our routines and procedures as they learn the expectations for 5th grade. As we prepare students for middle school and work to encourage and improve independence, responsibility, and accountability in our 5th graders, we ask that each student has a student planner as part of their school supplies. Student planners may be purchased locally from stores like the BX, Daiso, and Alpha or ordered online from sites like Amazon.com, WalMart.com, and OfficeDepot.com.
Please let us know if circumstances prevent your student from acquiring a planner. Students will be expected to write daily objectives, homework assignments, or important dates that impact their learning each day.

Illness- If your child is ill, please do not send them to school.
Note: Students must be fever-free without using fever-reducing medication for 24 hours (a complete school day) before returning to school. A student must remain home during episodes of vomiting in the past 24 hours. Students may return once the vomiting resolves (no further vomiting for 24 hours).
Immunizations- DoDEA requires all students to receive a flu vaccine. These are due by December 1.
DoDEA requires 11-year-olds to have Meningococcal and Tdap vaccines. Students enrolled in DoDEA must provide proof of these within ten days of their 11th birthday.
Medication- If your child requires medication or supplements at school, you must provide the required medication forms. Please reach out to Nurse Benedict directly for forms and instructions.

Math Homework Info
In our class, we front load math homework. That means we get our homework as we start a new lesson in our unit not after we’ve finished it. We do this so we can practice early and get familiar with the new ideas before we go deeper in class.
It’s kind of like getting a sneak peek at the game plan before the big match, it helps us feel ready, ask better questions, and learn more during the start of a new lesson. These assignments should only take up to 20 minutes as it is new content. Write down any questions they have on the sheet.

Students will have their first unit ELA test on Friday 9/20/25. Students have been working with skills like main idea and key details. They also have been working on their writing strategy using the stop light to create paragraphs. They have been hard at work to cover what they need to know for the unit.

To help build the neighborhood community, we have created an area to display family photos. Any snapshot of your child with their loved ones is great. For those who came for our Meet and Greet or Open House, you do not have to send a photo since we took family pictures that day. This photo will remain on display in our neighborhood throughout the year. Please also know this is optional for everyone, and you do not need to send a photo if you choose not to. We are excited to see the students share their pictures. Please send photos to abigail.seen@dodea.edu or with your learner to school. We appreciate your support!
