LEXILES: A "lexile" level indicates the level of difficulty at which a student can read with 75% accuracy. The majority of books have been given a lexile level, and students can easily determine whether a book falls within their own lexile level.
It is important to allow students to explore books and reading, to select books they are interested in for a wide variety of reasons, and to refrain from pushing them to books within a narrow range. A lexile is a bit like clothing size - you know you wear an 11, but sometimes a 9 fits and some days it takes a 16; the lexile "tag" gives you a starting place, but you should always be allowed to "try on" other sizes, too. Students will be "learning to read" and "reading to learn".
The Lexile Framework: Information about reading and lexiles, match your child's interest and lexile level to books (the AES library will not have all of these books), and look up lexiles for books.
Book Wizard App: Free app for your iPhone or other devices, scan the book's barcode to look up lexiles and retrieve information about the books, create/save/manage lists of books you want to read (or have read)
LEXILES are just one measure of how "difficult" a piece of reading is. Lexiles are weighed based on vocabulary, length of sentences, and length of paragraph. A low lexile does not mean a piece or reading does not have deep and meaningful ideas written in it, and a high lexile book also may or may not be thought-provoking. Remember, there is "learning to read" and also "reading to learn".
