We'll have a snacktime every morning about 9:30. This is when the kids can start to fade a bit and it gives them a little break between our language arts and math times and a chance to chat with their neighbors. This is ONLY snack for your child, not for the whole class. My only request is that it be something healthy (NO cookies, candy or chips) so that the kids get some good energy (instead of getting a sugar rush and then crashing) so they're ready and focused for the rest of the morning. Some suggestions (not limited to just these) are: fruit, raw veggies, yogurt, cheese and crackers, etc. Something healthy that you know they like and will eat.
Birthday treats: We've been told that children can bring in something for their birthday this year. However, if you're going to send something in with your child, please EMAIL me about it ahead of time. We will usually have these kind of treats near the end of the school day before we go to specials (around 1:15) , so even if your child brings something in during the morning, we'll be eating it in the afternoon. Please keep in minds NO treats containng nuts or peanut butter just to be on the safe side.
On Mondays, the kids will be given a little bit of reading and math to do from our Benchmark reading series and Reveal math series. This may come home in a packet, or it may be online. (THIS is the page where you'll find the assignments each week). The work should be completed and returned by Thursday.
Starting very soon, we'll have a Monday morning spelling pre-test and then a Friday spelling test. While we'll be working at spelling within the writing process, a spelling test is a really easy way to start to build good study habits with the kids where they'll see that even if they don't know the words on Monday, if they study a few minutes every night, they will know more or all of them by Friday. These words are part of the Benchmark reading series.
I'll be having the kids read with me in small groups and bring home a reading folder at least once a week. If your child brings their folder home, have them read the story to you, and then sign the sheet in their reading folder and return it all to school.
You can always contact me by email or we can set up an appointment to chat in the Class Google meet. My email address, (also seen at the top of this page) is: jeanne.ragonese@dodea.edu

The best way for your child to have a happy, successful year is for us to have good communication with each other. If you EVER have any concerns or questions, I'm happy to answer them. Also, if your child comes home with a particular concern, whether it's something in class, or a conflict with another child, etc. PLEASE let me know right away. YOU are the people your child trusts most, and, especially at the beginning of the school year when I'm still a stranger, they may be anxious or confused about something but feel uncomfortable speaking up. The more I know, the more we can work together to make this year a great one for your child.
You may want to have your child bring a bottle of water with them (preferably a small one or one they can refill rather than a big 2 liter one, which can be hard for them to handle). The kids will be able to use the water fountains this year, but we also have some of those new fountains like they have at airports where the kids can hold the bottle underneath a spout to easily fill it. We want to make sure the kids stay hydrated, especially during these hot days so if you'd like to send your child with a small bottle of water, that's fine.
Please send in a sweater or sweatshirt that they can keep in their classroom cubby. Although it seems strange when it's so hot outside, our classroom actually gets very chilly when the air conditioning is on. We can't regulate the level in our classoom and apparently, if they turn it down a bit, the classes upstairs get uncomfortably hot so even when it's hot outside, the kids can get chilly in the room when the air conditioning is cranked up.
Please make sure your child is wearing socks and sneakers when we have P.E. days. It can be easy for the kids to trip when they're wearing sandals, Crocs, dress shoes, etc. so Ms. Bradley wants them to make sure to wear something they can safely run in. As soon as I know what our schedule is, I'll let you know when the kids have P.E.
