Dear 2nd-Grade Families
Week of September 8th – Week 4
Week at a Glance – Learning Highlights in 2nd Grade!
This Thursday we are able to attend the NJROTC 9/11 Flag Raising Ceremony. Let’s wear our patriotic colors on September 11th as a way to show remembrance.
Language Arts:
We’re off to a great start in 2nd grade and excited to begin Week 1 of Unit 1 in Benchmark! Essential Question: Why do we need a government? In Week 1, teachers guide students through the process of writing a personal letter in response to a given prompt. In Weeks 2 and 3, teachers guide students through the process of taking a performance task.
In this unit, students read and compare selections about the government to understand its functions and the reasons behind its importance.
This week, we’ll be focusing on the following:
box, this, chest, wet, flag, him, jump, run, shop, stand
High-Frequency Words:
she, go, silent, hi, we
In math, we’re wrapping up Unit 2 in Reveal, which focuses on Place Value. This week, we’re wrapping up our Place Value unit in math! Students have been learning how numbers work by breaking them into hundreds, tens, and ones. This helps them understand how to read, write, and compare numbers up to 1,000. We’ve been using hands-on activities and visual models to build strong number sense.
In science, we’re having fun exploring plants as part of our FOSS unit, and we’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of our insects so we can dive deeper into life science! In science, we’re learning all about how plants and insects grow and change! Students are exploring:
What plants and insects need to live
How they grow and change over time
How are they similar and different
How they interact with their environment
We’re using hands-on activities to observe real plants—and soon, insects! It’s a fun and exciting way for students to become young scientists and learn about the world around them.
For social studies, we’re in Unit 4: Civics, where we’ll be learning about how one person can make a difference in their community—a powerful message for our young learners.
And last but not least, we had an absolute blast in the STEM lab last Friday! It’s always a joy to see the students so engaged and curious.
If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, feel free to reach out!
Thank you for your continued support,
