Week beginning 8th March 2021
I’m starting on my FNAF idea and exploring the range of rooms that I can recreate for the environment in which I want to set my characters. I’ve already done quite a bit of work on my study environment using blender.
Simon has said he thinks my idea using FNAF is a bit samey as previous projects.
As this week progresses, I’m increasingly finding this project uninspiring and wondering if I should scrap it and change tack. I feel as though I really need something a bit more uplifting and quirky.
The FNAF original idea is perhaps a bit ambitious for the timescale involved.
Week beginning 15th March 2021
I have decided to change tack and focus on animating a music video of a song I’ve been listening to. Lyn Lapid’s Producer Man. It’s so good.
I’m using Pro create on my ipad to storyboard my ideas for this music video. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to use Photoshop for this as I don’t have an account and we are having to work quite a bit from home at the moment. I’ve already produced a teaser, so I know roughly what I’m aiming for. I enjoy working like this as it allows my ideas to flow quickly and I can tidy up the mess later. It’s really free flowing and I find it very relaxing.
I’m also starting with the main character, the Producer Man this week, creating him in Blender. This is pretty straight forward. I’m using simple shapes to construct him.
I’ve also printed out the song lyrics and I’m writing down my ideas and thoughts about the imagery and how I’d like to create the transitions. The main characters seem obvious, but I’m thinking about the lyrics ‘make you a star’ and seeing stars on the floor of the Hollywood walk of fame in my head.
I have planned out my project schedule and what I should be doing and when. I don’t really need that much in terms of resources because I’m mainly using Blender and Procreate.
I’ve also done a bit of research into Lyn Lapid and the background to the song.
Week beginning 22nd March 2021
Continuing with Producer Man scenes in Blender. They are going pretty well so far I think.
I am pleased with his image and how he looks. I’ve also started work on the girl character.
I created a survey for my friends to complete in order to help me with the issue of target audience.
Some of my friends don’t like the girl I’m creating and think it’s too simplistic, but they haven’t understood the vibe I’m trying to create and how she is meant to be humanless etc, like a jelly baby character.
I’ve also been working on a bit of research into animated music videos and what I like visually about them.
I’ve been using the program DaVinci Resolve, which is a video editing software program.
Also, the results from my survey suggest that I’m doing ok with the project so far.
Week beginning 5th April 2021
My favourite change so far is the camera angle on the girl synched with the vocals ‘I can make you a star’ The view is from above and just works perfectly. I’ve asked a few friends what they think so far, and they also really like how this bit works seamlessly. I really like the change of perspective.
This week I’ve been watching a series called ‘The Flight Attendant’, it’s brilliant. I’m also loving the animated opening title sequence (created by Taki Ikari) and how the scenes change and split. I’m going to use the mirror imaging idea in this music video.
Week beginning 12th April 2021
I’m working on the scene where she is signing the paperwork. I want it to appear that as soon as she signs the contract her soul becomes under his control, almost as if she becomes possessed. I’ve been inspired for much of my life by Disney and for this scene I keep thinking of the animated song ‘friends on the other side’ from the Princess and the Frog.
I have been looking into what makes a Disney character evil or good and how colour has an important role in this. Producer Man needed to be wearing black, as most villains wear dark colours like black, purple or red. Red would probably come to mind as a good colour, but it really shows determination or passion. These are qualities you would definitely find in a villain. Most hero’s wear blue, yellow, green, orange or white.
Once she has signed their eyes change colour and become lights as though some sort of possession has just taken place. I think it works really well.
Week beginning 19th April 2021
I’m storyboarding again, because I haven’t yet finished putting my ideas together for the final sections of the music video. I’m not sure I’m going to have enough time to finish it.
Week beginning 26th April 2021
I’m working on the mirror imaging scenes this week. It takes some time, but is fairly straight forward.
Week beginning 3rd May 2021
One of my friends suggested I add an airplane flying in the background to help the imagery of the girl moving to LA. I’ve spent hours this week trying to get this to work, but it has been a disaster. I created a simple plane picture using procreate and made a black triangle that I would then green screen so that the next scene would be slowly revealed when the plane flies by. It didn’t work. The re scaling was a problem and the image being revealed was too pixelated to mark out a defined shape for the transition and the green screen effect was too expensive.
Week beginning 10th May 2021
I’m starting to panic a bit about getting this whole thing done. This is supposed to be my snagging week, but I still haven’t finished all the scenes and it is all taking sooo long.
I haven’t given up on adding an airplane to that earlier scene, so I think I may have solved it. Using a png image, downloading it and putting it in the background rather than using it as a transition has meant it works as a suggestion. If I were to do this all again, I would animate it within the scene to start with rather than add it afterwards.
I’ve created a new scene where I‘ve modelled diamonds that fall behind producer man instead of the coins.
Got behind on the journal, so have been writing that up this week too.
Week Beginning 17th May 2021
Trying to finish scenes this week and just about everything else that needs tying up.
I’ve also created some new scenes for the next verse of the song about how she’s ‘caught with no way out’. I’m using the image of mirrors surrounding the girl and how disorienting it is. It’s working really well. I just need to sort out the timing and render the scene. Everyone loved my work which is positive :)
