My name is Eliana Chiariello, and I am currently a senior at Fox Lane High School in Bedford, New York. Through my school's science research program, I have been able to conduct research, write a paper, create posters and slideshows, and learn important life skills such as email communication and time management. Last year, I conducted research on how to discern the origin of migratory butterflies utilizing stable isotopes, and this past summer I started a new project on locating a protein that regulates flowering time in Arabidopsis thaliana. This portfolio contains my journey and everything I have created along the way as well as additional information about me! Enjoy!
2023 - 2024
My first year of science research was introductory and culminated in a proposed project at the end of the year! With my mentor Dr. Megan Reich at the University of Ottawa, I planned to study the migration of monarch butterflies over the Appalachian Mountains. I competed in the Somers Science Fair in the spring.
2024-2025
My second year of science research was spent researching the origins of the Cameroonian population of painted lady butterflies. I visited my mentor's institution during August 2024 to conduct the methodology for my project! I competed as a finalist in the 2025 New York Upstate Regional JSHS, as well as the Westchester Science & Engineering Fair (WESEF).
2025-2026
My third year of science research has started off researching SUF4, a protein that regulates flowering time in many plants, including Arabidopsis thaliana. I worked with my mentor this past summer at Syracuse University to conduct the methodology for the project. I am planning on participating in the Westchester Science & Engineering Fair (WESEF) in March.
