Generative AI, or GenAI for short, is a powerful tool with amazing potential to aid us in plenty of processes. Things from filling out info sheets, managing data, sorting information, and even writing research papers. However, in recent times among the youth, GenAI has built up a reputation as a sort of “fast-forward” tool. Something to get away with doing less or no work at all for any given job involving typing. These GenAIs could possibly be supplying and outputting fallacious statements to unsuspecting people looking to make their lives easier. This is why schools in the Philippines should look into implementing rules so as to maintain the integrity and quality of the work that students put in.
It's hard for people to identify what or who was accountable when it comes to AI in learning. “As there are many parties involved in a Generative AI tool (data provider, software owner, developer, user and the AI tool itself), liability is difficult to establish when something goes wrong” (Legal Considerations, n.d.). When these mistakes do happen, it is important that it does not affect other aspects of the work. Over-reliance on AI, especially in learning, can hinder both a teacher's ability to convey the lesson as well as the student's ability to understand.
There is also an element of personality, as well as the ability for more emotionally adaptable feedback, that human learning has over totally AI-reliant learning. “Furthermore, the absence of human touch could make it challenging for students to grasp complex concepts, as AI lacks the ability to comprehend and respond empathetically to students’ emotional and cultural nuances.” (Quan, 2024). Teachers are still needed in a student's journey throughout school because of their ability to personalize the way they teach to the class or individual students.
Students may feel as though they are being left behind or being cheated for not taking full advantage of the utility of GenAI. “One student pointed out, 'A well-balanced usage guideline needs to be in place so that the benefits of the tech can be leveraged.' Without institutional guidance, students may feel at a loss for how to appropriately use GenAI in universities.” (Chan & Hu, 2023). In order for students to feel comfortable with GenAI in their learning environments, clear rules need to be set in place for everyone to be able to use, but not abuse, tools that GenAI may bring, while also maintaining that we must not be totally reliant on GenAI.
It could be argued that these restrictions might cause a lack of creativity when using GenAI. What we do or don’t do with normal tools like scissors and box cutters shouldn't matter to others, right? However, most tools like scissors and box cutters have the potential to be used detrimentally for others in some extremes. I could cut someone with my cutter, or accidentally cut the paper of another person, depending on how I am using the tool. These restrictions should be viewed more as instructions for using GenAI safely and ethically at all times.
To sum it all up, the abilities of GenAI cannot be understated, which means it is all the more important for governing bodies to establish rules and guidelines in order to allow people to use GenAI as an assisting tool rather than a way to automate jobs.
