For the past two years, I have been volunteering at Lawerence General Hospital as a patient activity volunteer. I visit patients and spend some time with them. I offer them books, magazines, games, etc. I have loved getting to meet so many new people and help cheer them up. I also have been able to learn more about healthcare by witnessing firsthand the internal operations of a major hospital. Comparing this experience with my international service, I have developed a passion for healthcare reform.
During my amazing trip to the Dominican Republic with GLA, I engaged in 40 service hours. We traveled to different rural areas in the DR that were experiencing poverty. These communities, unfortunately, did not have access to a public restroom. Our job was to build one for them! Each location was at a different stage of development. We cut up water bottles for the insulation, wrapped them in chicken wire, and cemented the building. After us, the groups continued our work by painting the exterior. The remaining half of my trip was spent at medical brigades. I had the opportunity to shadow doctors as they gave medical care to communities that had minimal access to healthcare. I had a different job each day, some of which included checking patients in, getting medical history, taking vitals, shadowing the doctor, and helping the pharmacy. I also got to put my Spanish to use! I will never forget the time I spent here and the impact I made.
Partners in Health is a social justice organization providing high-quality healthcare to those in most need. Their goal is to cure the injustices experienced in the healthcare system. As someone who strives to make healthcare more accessible, I started a nonprofit to help Partners in Health, and through a month-long endeavor, I was able to raise over $550.
Most of my fundraising took place through social media and the distribution of the flyer that I made.
