Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Since 2023, I have served as a youth representative for Andover’s DEI Youth Forum and a researcher for the Data Gathering Working Group. Through the fora, I lead equity-centered conversations for peers and local organizations including the Andover Police Department and Memorial Hall Library staff. As a researcher, I've explored topics in racial bias reporting, affordable housing initiatives, and Indigenous People's Day.

Essex Art Center

In 2023, I volunteered as a classroom assistant for an arts-based summer camp at the Essex Art Center.  Over the course of the week, I taught children aged 5-8 how to create mixed-media collages using ink, paint, and other mark-making materials. While most students were from Essex County, a couple hail from the Dominican Republic, so I sought fun ways to bridge the language gap.

Andover Islamic Center

I volunteered biweekly in the fall of 2022 with an Afghan family in Haverhill, Massachusetts, assisting elementary school children with English and math homework. Using games such as Monopoly and fun drawings, I found ways to circumvent the language barrier and communicate concepts in addition and subtraction. At the end of the season, I had a much better understanding of Afghan culture and how to work with children which led me to apply for a position at Essex Art Center.
