Spanish 2

Overview: This course is for students who successfully completed Andover's Middle School program at a Novice-High level.  It is designed to reinforce and further develop oral competency through active student participation.  Reading and writing are gradually expanded in length and depth as the course progresses.  Readings dealing with Hispanic culture are incorporated into each unit.  Audio-visual materials will be used to enrich these discussions.   The proficiency target at the end of this course is Intermediate-Low. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Middle School Program at the Novice-High Level or Advanced Beginners and recommendation of teacher.

Spanish 3

Overview:This is an intermediate course intended to continue students’ development of communication skills.  The content provides for a comprehensive review of basic grammatical structures and the introduction of more complex grammatical concepts through real life contexts within the diverse Spanish-speaking world. Students engage in dialogues, discussions, and debates regarding the customs and practices of the Dominican Republic and Spain among other Latin American countries. Topics and themes are explored and analyzed through a critical and reflective lens while students further develop argumentation skills through writing and speaking. The proficiency target at the end of this course is emerging Intermediate-Mid.  Prerequisite:  Spanish 2  or completion of Middle School program or Advanced Beginners at the intermediate-low level and recommendation of teacher.

Spanish Conversation

Overview: This 4th year intermediate, elective course is conducted entirely in Spanish.  During daily class discussions, students apply their knowledge of Spanish to sharpen their communication skills by identifying and asking significant questions.  The keys to success for students will be above all, an active willingness to collaborate and to demonstrate originality in oral presentation of group projects. The proficiency target at the end of this course is Intermediate-Mid. 

Prerequisite:  Spanish 3

Reflection: Work on grammar and study culture of other countries. We then would discuss these countries with other students which would then grant us a deeper understanding of the subject. 

Latin American Studies for Social Justice

Overview: This 4th year elective course is an exploration of the Spanish-speaking world through its history.  Students will develop the skills to understand main ideas and some supporting details from authentic readings regarding political history and how these readings compare to the U.S. perspective.  This course also promotes critical and social justice approaches to understand Latin American culture and history by including humanitarian topics in its curriculum with critical engagement from students in the target language and some English about these issues. The proficiency target at the end of this course is Intermediate-Mid. Prerequisite:  Spanish 3 


Reflection: Learn about Latin American countries and nations. This leads to learning more about these cultures including language, food, and Landscape geography.
