Sunset in Hawaii
A week-long service trip during the April vacation of 2022 through Rustic Pathways. We learned the importance of preserving culture and native biodiversity by exploring historic monuments, visiting UNESCO sites, and meeting with authentic Hawaiian oral historian Michaela. One massive problem they face is a lack/misuse of water supply, so we talked with locals to learn more about water misuse and possible solutions. Another problem is the growing number of invasive species and non-native island vegetation - so we helped promote native vegetation by planting a mini forest. Non-native plants are partly blamed for rapid-fire expansion and destruction at Lahaina, Maui, in the summer of 2023.
A weekly activity with the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club(LBGC) where I plan and run STEM experiments. During 2022, I ran experiment kits provided through a collaboration between ThermoFisher and the LBGC. Some of the activities I ran using this kit were the LED Challenge, where we lit an LED using a circuit made of a battery, salt, and glue, and Art Bot, where we used motors to create a robot that drew pictures for us. After running out of these activities, I started creating my own experiments, using favorites from my childhood as inspiration to make a lava lamp using water and oil, and marble runs using paper towel rolls.

Every other week, I tutor middle school students in English and math. Due to COVID-19 closing schools early, the club was started to help students learn any material they need for the next year. I plan lessons based on their academic weaknesses in English and math, and the curriculum taught in their respective grade. Furthermore, I assign homework to help them practice this content.
