LESSON 4
MOON AND ITS PHASES
MOON AND ITS PHASES
It is the Earth's natural satellite.
Moon doesn’t have its own light, it is only visible through the reflection of the light coming from the sun.
As the moon and earth move, the moon’s appearance changes from time to time.
These apparent changes in the moon’s shape are called PHASES.
New moon happens when the moon is between the sun and earth, we cannot see it because the sun shines on the side of the moon away from the earth.
Waxing Crescent happens after one or two days from new moon. It is when we see a small edge of the moon lighted.
First Quarter happens after about a week from new moon. It is when we see half of the moon lighted.
Waxing Gibbous happens after a few days from first quarter. It is when we see more than half of the moon lighted.
Full moon happens after one week from first quarter. It is when the whole side of the moon facing the earth becomes lighted. This happens when the earth is between the sun and the moon.
Waning Gibbous happens after a few days from full moon. It is when the lighted part of the moon becomes less.
Last Quarter happens after a week from full moon. It is when we see half of the moon lighted.
Waning Crescent happens after one or two days from last quarter. It is when a small edge of the moon lighted.
It will go back to the NEW MOON phase and the cycle continues.
This full cycle happens in a duration of 29 1/2 days.
