The Kankana-ey are an indigenous group primarily residing in the northern part of the Philippines, particularly in the Mountain Province and parts of Benguet in the Cordillera Administrative Region. They belong to the larger group of Igorot people, who inhabit the Cordillera mountain range.
The origin of the Kankana-ey, like that of many indigenous groups, is deeply rooted in oral traditions and cultural histories rather than documented or written records. The Kankanaey, along with other Igorot tribes, are thought to be descendants of the original inhabitants of the Philippines who have resided in the Cordillera region for thousands of years. These indigenous peoples have historically lived in mountainous terrains, which isolated them from other groups and influences, helping to preserve their distinct cultural practices, languages, and traditions.
