The South Pointe Middle School robotics program, including both the after-school club and class, is oriented towards achieving success in and spreading knowledge about robotics competitions and learning processes. The program is on its second year of competition and will have teams competing this year in the Turning Point and Next Level challenges. The South Pointe robotics teams are very glad to be a part of the VEX and VEX IQ robotics programs and competitions, and after dedicating time and effort to their robots, we hope to be successful this year!
The South Pointe Middle School robotics and coding program was started as a club only in 2016 by Mrs. Crystal Dira, the technology teacher at South Pointe, and Mrs. Debra Brady, a math teacher. We started off building just VEX IQ ClawBots from the instruction manual, with no coding. Over the years, the robotics and coding clubs split into separate clubs, meeting and different times and places. The coding club started to focus on code.org and Scratch coding, and the robotics club continued on with VEX IQ teams. We started the VEX program in the 2017-18 season, with two teams competing in In the Zone competitions, 87895A and 87895B. At the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, a robotics class was added as an elective that could be taken as a period during the school day. VEX and VEX IQ teams with this class would have a period every day to work on their robot and the advice of technology teacher Mrs. Dira. These teams in the class would also be able to compete if their robots finished construction and coding before competition dates. The South Pointe robotics program has come a long way to get where they are today, and we hope that our program can continue to thrive and be successful in the future!
We are based in South Pointe Middle School, located at 20671 Larkstone Dr, Walnut, CA 91789.
