Selecting our editors was a daunting task in the role of EIC. There is so much consideration that needs to go into deciding how to create the strongest editor board to, in turn, make the strongest publication. We approached our editor selection systematically, first having everyone fill out the same application based on the position they wanted and then conducting in-person interviews where we asked follow-up questions based on their applications. This way, we were able to gather as much information and give all the candidates as equal an opportunity as possible before making our final decisions.
A unique duty as EIC is leading the class each day and this, especially the agenda, provides an opportunity to touch base with the whole class and make sure were al on the same page. We utilize the agenda for this which allows us a definite list of things we need to adress that the staff can also reference from Google Classroom.
One of the most intimidating parts of my new job as EIC was editing third drafts. I had never edited writing before and had tremendous personal doubts about my ability to contribute much through my edits. However with some help from Makena and Mariana when I first started. I realized that third draft wasn't actually that daunting, and that my job was more to identify issues with the flow or areas that seemed weak or out of place than to manage the articles actual angle. Even now, with much more experience in the area, I still will ask my Co-Editor-in-Chief for her opnion on any writing issues I'm not confident about.
