What is matter?
Matter is any physical substance that has mass and volume (occupies space).
What is the difference between elements and compounds?
Elements are substances that are made up of only one type of atom. Examples : pure gold (Au), pure silver (Ag)
Compounds are substances that are made up of two or more types of atoms. Examples : H₂0 (water), NaCl (salt)
What is the difference between heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures?
A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture where the contents are not evenly mixed together.
Examples : Salad, Trial Mix, Cereal
Every scoop/handful you take of each mixture will have a different ratio of each ingredient compared to the last.
A homogeneous mixture is a mixture where the contents are evenly mixed together.
Examples : Lemonade, Soda, Juice
Every sip you take of each mixture will have the same ratio of each ingredient compared to the last.
How are acids and bases different in terms of the properties (taste, feel, reactivity) and pH compared to neutral water?
Acids tend to taste sour or tart, feel like water (slightly sticky), and are reactive with metals to create hydrogen gas.
Bases tend to taste bitter, feel slippery, and are reactive with oils and fats.
Acids have a lower pH than water (0-6) while bases have a higher pH than water (8-14).
Example of an acid :

This is an acid because lemons have a pH of 2-3.
Example of a base :

This is a base because soap has a pH of 10-11.
