Role play events are what most people would consider the baseline DECA event. For the most part, everyone tends to do a Role Play event alongside their Written or VBC. A role play event is made of a (multiple choice) written test and two short role plays. A written test will either be a cluster exam or will be specialized to the specific event. Role plays are essentially business proposals by the competitor to a judge. The competitor has ten minutes to prepare a proposal based on a prompt. They then take on the role of a business professional (as described in the role play sheet) and then pitch their plan and solution to the judge while addressing performance indicators. Each role play is worth the same as a cluster test so the score weighting comes out to 33% for the written test and 33% for each role pay.
There are individual role plays but also team decision making events. Here, each member takes the written test individually but the partners do their role play together. These role plays have a much longer prep period but also have a longer presentation period. In addition, in team events, the team only presents one roleplay in contrast to the two roleplays that individual events must complete.
