June 2019. Volunteer as a research assistant with a community research program through the Center for Health Equity Transformation at the University of Kentucky that was studying childhood asthma in Appalachia. I assisted a medical student in gathering survey information and recruiting participants. I also helped by asking participants questions from the surveys at local grocery stores and going house to house asking for volunteers. This helped me gain confidence speaking to strangers and gain experience in communicating with individuals from all walks of life. I grew tremendously as a person during these two weeks, it allowed me to open my eyes up and be more compassionate to those less fortunate.
July 2018, July 2019, July 2020. To show my love for animals each year on my birthday I make a donation of my birthday money and volunteer at the Floyd County Animal Shelter to assist in cleaning kennels or helping out in any way that I can. I always encourage to adopt and not buy from breeders or pet shops to help control the animal population.
September 2018 and September 2019. Dedicated to my church’s youth group each year in the fall I help in preparing the float for the Jenny Wiley Parade. We like to be colorful to draw attention to our theme: ABC. A stands for admit, B is for believe and C is confess. I feel that if we can reach one person with this message on the day of the parade all of our time and commitments are worthwhile.
Summer 2020. Akers Lawn Service, was founded and operated throughout the summer. I was the founder and only employee for my first company. I did yard work, moved dirt, worked on drains, etc. for my clients. I maintained about six regular clients and did regular work for them throughout this time on the outsides of their homes. With the money I earned I started my own checking and savings account.
Summer of 2018 and 2019. Vacation Bible School. Volunteer to help with the kids outdoor activities and face painting.
November 13, 2020 National Diabetes Awareness Day. I wanted to bring awareness to this disease and how it affects people differently and I contacted a local pharmacy and asked what I could do to help on this day. They let me handout brochures on this topic. My grandfather passed away in 2015 due to complications of diabetes.
Rogers Explorer Camp Summer 2018 at University of the Cumberlands, community service was to pick up trash on a stretch of highway.
October 2018 and 2019. Football team hosted safe trunk or treat for kids and gave out inspected and approved candy. This was held at the high school parking lot during Trick or Treat on Halloween. Once again due to COVID-19 we were not allowed to do this on Halloween of this past year.
2019-2020 National Science Foundation (NSF) student volunteer to help implement county wide grant between Floyd County and South Fayette Township School District in Pittsburg, PA. I served as a student consultant and liason in the research group to give my opinion and reviews of equipment under evaluation for students. This gave insight into the equipment needed to develop the Floyd County STEM programs.
2018-2019. I shadowed an occupational therapist at a local nursing home and played checkers and BINGO with elderly residents.
2018-present. Many activities at church allow me to volunteer and demonstrate my love for humanity. I have participated in food drives, collecting items for victims of hurricane in Texas, Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes, I am a member of the tech crew (assisting with lights during plays and programs, camera videoing and all things tech). I have participated in preparing food for Celebrate Recovery on Thursdays 6-7. And once monthly preparing food for Dixie which is a program where we travel to a local housing project for a short gospel message and fellowship.
2018- present Member of Friends of Jenny Wiley. I participate by helping to keep the bike and hiking trails clear of logs, garbage and leaves.
2018 – present. In honor of my grandmother I enjoy walking each year in the Breast Cancer Awareness walk. I generally join a local team to help raise money for the cause and the past 3 years I have joined up with Team Parkview Pharmacy. I enjoy playing the games offered and competing in a fun atmosphere.
