At Birney Tech Elementary I helped take of the children jumping in the jumpers. We were supervising making sure the children weren't rough playing. I also helped clean up at the end of the fall carnival. We made this come fantastic event come true for these children to make a memorable memory for them.
Having Fall Carnivals and volunteering is essential in our community. This is important as we demonstrate our leadership skills and be a great example to the children at the elementaries. I also emphasized how some parents noticed our dedicated and gave us important information about life and college just what we needed. We all have to work together in our community and especially for the kids, because some aren't as fortunate as others. Seeing a smile on their face made me happy that I am making a change in our community, even the little things matter.
Having Fall Carnival is memorable. Fall Carnival's help children learn the different seasons. And for the children in 5th grade they are embracing the very bit last of their childhood before they transition into Jr High. It is important to be a volunteer at these events because being Alturistic and representing my organization just allows us to demonstrate how AVID student are.
At Rivera Elemantry we had another Fall Carnival. During this carnival I helped with many things such as preparing the food and selling. One of my favorite jobs was running one of the games for the children. It was called splat the rat. This was very hard to though as many children didn't win. But it was important as children need to realize that they all don't win. As volunteers we also took an extra step as we even tried dressing up. I went to certain extents such as wearing unicorn ears to make it more majestic for the children.
At the Book Fair I started off by helping out in the Arts and Crafts Bookmark section. We had to learn how to make buttons. origami butterfly bookmarks and be able to have patience with the children. Something that was really fascinating to me is being around children because it makes me feel like a child again. I then was transferred to a room that we help children make Santa letters. It was so releaving when the parents thanked us for making this possible for their children.
Having a book fair for children in a community where the social demographics are low is great. Giving away a million books to children and teens opens up a new door for possibilities. Reading books can also be a coping mechanism for some children. Most children were jumping of joy because they got to pick their favorite books even though they weren't able to afford it, the best part was that it was free. Philanthropy and altruistic acts represent our community more and more and we are becoming more united for the youth.
In Tutoring we got to work with the freshman. Working with freshman at Mrs. Senteno's class was rewarding as a senior. We got to give them our best advice. In peer groups it was a little difficult to get their attention but at the end of the day it was successful. We had to help them with Costa's questions and introduce them to a new learning environment. Some students helped each other which is one the main goals, since they are not all on the same level.
Tutoring is important for the community as certain students are left behind because they don't understand the same content as the same pace as others. Tutoring allows students to work at their own pace while understanding the process. The tutoring model allows teachers to understand us students more as the way they learn. Tutoring also works on presentation skills in front of a group. So, you can also think of it is positive as it strengthens your presentation skills in many ways such as working on being nervous or projecting your voice. I've seen many improvements this semester I can't wait to see their improvements in the next semester!
