My journey through journalism...

Although media arts is a huge passion of mine now, in my freshman year it was just about the opposite. I joined the class because I was a bit ignorant of the field and thought that it was just a graphic design class, so when we started the year with journalism law, and ethics, you could say I was less than enthusiastic... This class was over Zoom as well so it was hard for me to stay motivated. But as I got further into the journalism basics, I started to notice that this was the only class I was actively looking forward to joining every day. At the end of the year, we were given the choice to either stay on the pathway by applying to be on a staff or drop the class. I decided to apply for the Endeavor Yearbook staff and have been grateful since.

My first year on staff was a little rough, to be honest. It was the first year back from COVID and the adjustment was very difficult for me. The staff hierarchy didn't fit my personality very well and it was a struggle to stay motivated. Regardless of this, I knew that this was what I wanted to do, so I stayed consistent and my efforts were eventually recognized. I was asked to apply for the Executive Writing Editor.

When I stepped into this role, my junior year and second year on staff, I felt my whole mood towards journalism shift and I started to love working and connecting with the staff. The position was a lot more responsibility than I was used to but I like to think I took it on pretty well because I moved up my next year to be the Editor-In-Chief of the staff.

I am going to be real, I thought this role would kill me but it has been such a blast and I have enjoyed this year so much. I am so proud of how far I have come and of how amazing my staff is. We all get along so well and it is so fun to lead such a great team. I have gone to a couple of conferences for scholastic journalism and I have a couple left to finish out the year. At SIPA and JEA I have had the most incredible and unique experiences and I wouldn't trade them for the world.

I plan on attending the University of Kentucky this fall as a Journalism major with a minor in Media Arts. I have met the most interesting people and lifelong friends throughout my career and can't wait to further pursue my passion in college.
